Shipman’s history

Shipman is a hamlet in Saskatchewan whose story begins in the 1930s. The post office opened in 1933, and the school district was organized the following year, with a school built and opened in 1934.

The first industry was a sawmill, which cut timber into cordwood and loaded it into boxcars right at the community. As the land was cleared, farming took over as the main way of making a living, and a grain elevator went up in 1935.

Shipman saw several serious fires over the years. They destroyed businesses including three grocery stores, a restaurant, a service station, a poolroom, the community hall, and the grain elevator and its annex.

Change came in later decades. The school closed in 1975, the elevator in 1981, and the rail line was abandoned in the early 1990s.
